interface II

So we're into the sixth version of my blog after the last version hung around for a year or so.

Now, a bit of info on this image. This photo was taken one lovely spring afternoon, featuring the iconic Old Well from the UNC Chapel Hill campus. I would like to think of this image as a tribute to my time in UNC Chapel Hill, the awesome friends I made and the memories I now hold dear.

A milestone in my life indeed.

I've dropped the tagboard cos its useless and taking eons to load. But thanks to Angela who helped me set it up, I still do like and will miss the pink interface.

So yeah, it's the sixth one you fellas!

Yours.

Gatecrashed sj's and pj's dinner and dance at the Raffles Ballroo/m, where Steph and Kah joined in later.

Amazing how the core of my social life circles very much around the people of RV, the school we often feel slightly abashed to admit to have attended. But it is precisely within this institution where I have found the ones I hold dear, not just in the years that had past, but I firmly believe, into the years till we all grow old - friends of calibre I hardly find in people these days.

Nothing like friends whom have watched you grow up into a world less than perfect, and still treasure that child-like spark that brought us together as friends in the first place.

Dinner at Halia, as I mentioned in the last post, was legendary. Just look at the garden setting around our wooden gazebo, totally amazing. We're definitely heading back for Jess' bday. Too bad the night mode for the camera required super steady hands, which this waitress apparently didn't have, but I guess it captured the mood well - dessert wine, nature, great friends, a slight breeze, chocolate cake - I can't think of a better combination.
halia
Yup, that's Junhan's little surprise in the centre. I just can't stop raving about this place.

Afterwhich, we headed for some karaoke-ing, where diluted beer and english oldies with crappy mtvs ruled the night.

Frankly speaking, I was feeling sleepy, didn't quite help that the mtvs were really bad, but thankfully some typical saturday night wala repertoire kept me singing like shirlyn.

Okay, here's trivia I just noticed. There's a pedestrian crossing just where my block is, and you know how it sounds off this tweeting signal when its the green man? I realized that after 10pm (of 11pm), it goes to silent mode! Talk about sparing a thought!

Ok gnite.

On the finer things in life.

One, I'm really very satisfied with this week's floral piece at home, credit has to go to my florist though, it was totally her idea. Inexpensive and totally exuding the countryside feel.

Two, last weekend was legendary. Dinner at
Halia Restaurant with Jess, Weng and a surprise birthday treat for Junhan. Photos pending Mr Wu's efficiency. Shaw+Smith Sauvignon Blanc was a delightful play on the palate, Jess and I agreed that it was one of the best wines we've had, which goes down really well with our fish for maincourse.

Three, the closing performance of the Esplanade's Da:ns Fest, where the ritual of the mystical whirling dervishes of Turkey was presented at the Theatre.

Else, my flight up to Tokyo and subsequently LA has finally been confirmed. Travelling alone is at the same time thrilling, scary but peaceful within. My flight to New York and North Carolina has to be settled still, but I am sure that would work out in no time.

Essays are clearing one by one, and my days are returning back to what it used to be. Time flies, really. A semester is almost over and I'll be embarking on a journey of a lifetime in less than two months. There seem to be so many things I'll have to leave behind in Singapore, yet there stands so many unopened doors in the States waiting for me. That's what happens when you are so attached to the things and people back home, and you just have to grit your teeth and simply leave, knowing well that faith will see you through no matter what.

Just as you begin to think that the last post looked morbidly nerdish, the last weekend presented itself to me as a busy (but in a good way) weekend of celebrations (no, it wasn't hari raya). But it was lunch at The Line which stole the limelight.
Slide2
When mooncake aka sj was raving about The Line, I didn't quite give much thought to it until I went there myself. Thanks to dining as a big group, we were seated at what seems to me as the best place in the restaurant, the extension where the sun peeks into the glass-roofed pool side area. Excellent ambience, which is really what I notice and appreciate each time I'm at a eatery.

The food was, needless to say, nothing short of the best.

In other news, I'm back at the library (again) trying to complete the first draft of my essay. Back to being morbidly nerdish, I really like the Central Lib. I really wish you could see what I am seeing now, the early evening sun slicing through the window blinds, leaving columns of light on my work table, and in the horizon, the busy straits beyond the Pasir Panjang port.

Edited to add on 16.10.07:

Just a small idea of the big picture.

This is my new favourite haunt in the library. The SMC, also known as the Singapore-Malaysia Collection. Its is a glassed up reference corner in the library, with every possible book, newspaper article, newsletter or publication about Singapore (and malaysia of course). I love doing research in here cos its really quiet and allows me to leave the bustling footsteps of N U S behind. Also, the SMC has an amazing collection of all I want to know about Singapore's urban development. Coming to the SMC is like entering a treasure trove of information, much to a urban geographer's delight I must say.

Just look at the volumes of ancient (well not really lah) books they have. Its really a hard-to-describe feeling flipping through these pages of antiquity and history, taking in the trends and fancies of an era gone by, and you begin to what what generations after you would say of our time, our memories and our way of life today. I've seen amazing photos of old colonial Singapore and eye opening publications and offical documents I'd never thought I'll see.

I know it says Friday 4:04pm, but it is actually Saturday 8:20pm as I write this in the SMC. My research for two papers have found me here almost everyday, but I do not seem to mind at all. But I am hungry now, time for dinner.
